There are so many wonderful places to go in Palos Verdes! When I lived in New York, there were so many wonderful places to visit and it seemed like I only went when visitors came into town. Well, don’t wait until you have guests, go and enjoy now. So I thought I’d include some great places to visit, right here on the Peninsula.

Take a 30 min to whole day stroll through the 87 acre South Coast Botanic Garden located in Palos Verdes Estates, California. Are you bringing Fido? Dogs will only be admitted to South Coast Botanic Garden on designated days and times, with advanced reservations. Dogs are not permitted in the Garden at any other times outside of designated dog walking hours. There are many gardens ranging from the Japanese garden to the Garden of the Senses and Mediterranean garden, there will surely be one that blows you away. The South Botanic Garden in Palos Verdes is located 10 miles south of Los Angeles International Airport. Only a few miles up the Palos Verdes hill is Palos Verdes Peninsula High School with an outdoor mall, The Promenade on the Peninsula, across the street.

There are over 15,000 landscaped trees and plants from around 140 families and 2,000 different species including Ginkgos, Pittosporum, Coast Redwoods, and flowering fruit trees. Many of the plants in the garden come from South Africa and Australia. Ducks, geese, herons, and coots love to dive into the small lake and stream bed, with over 300 species of birds being recorded.

History: The Botanic Garden has an interesting history. This present garden site was first operated from 1929 to 1956 as an open pit, producing over one million tons of crude diatomite. The land was then sold to a sanitary landfill to the County of Los Angeles in 1957 due to declining production. The County of Board Supervisors approved establishing 87 acres as an experiment in land reclamation starting in 1956. The land was landscaped as an example of land recycling with over 3.5 million tons of refuse. Over 40,000 plants were donated by the County Arboretum, nurseries, and individuals for the first planting taking place overlooking Rolling Hills Road. Watch the whole video for more info.
