How To Measure a Rug for Your Dining Room and Living Room

How to Measure Rugs for Dining Rooms and Living Rooms

Hi Everyone Are you wondering: how do I measure a rug for my living room or how do I measure a rug for my dining room? Or maybe you are thinking you want to #prepareyourhomeforsale and want to know #howtouserugsforstaging. Whether you’re planning on staying home, selling, or buying, this is really good information!

Today we are with Wendy, the owner of Torrance Carpet Remnants and Rugs Warehouse in #Torrance , CA. Wendy tells us, how we figure out how to measure a rug for the dining room.

Wendy - The proper way for a dining room rug, you would want to always pull all of your chairs out so that you have a true measurement. You don’t want half your chair on the rug, half off. So just remember, pull all your chairs out like you’re eating dinner across from someone. Then take that measurement and that would be the proper rug size. Measure just behind the back of the chair.

Clara - Thank you Wendy. You know I’ve always had an issue trying to figure out how big of a carpet or how small of a carpet to get for the dining room. So now our next question is: how do we measure a rug in our living room?

Wendy - Living room rugs usually come in two sizes: they’ll come in 5 by 7, which is like a coffee table size. That will show off most of your wood floors. If your goal is to make it a little cozier and a little more quiet, I would suggest 8 by 10. That way the front of the couch or a few of your chairs can sit on it and it keeps all the furniture stable so they don’t slide.

Clara - Thanks so much Wendy. You know I love to support small businesses. So right now what we’re doing is we’re looking for carpeting because we are in the process of preparing a home for sale in Rancho Palos Verdes. Therefore, we will be replacing the rugs there. You know in some of my videos, I do cover some of the most important things that you could do to sell your home. Here at the Torrance Carpet Remnants and Rugs Warehouse, they have all kinds of rugs on rolls. Remnant does not mean it’s just a little piece. It means it could even be a whole roll. At the house we are preparing for sale, we are doing over one thousand square feet and it’s considered a “remnant”. They also have really beautiful rugs. If you take a look over here at Stanton, I’m really interested in some of the newer rugs that have an ocean motif background. They come across as very interesting.

Wendy also does a lot of work for many of the larger stores that you might know. She does the seam work in those stores. They have a very big area to cut the rugs and they do all kinds of beautiful things - like round rugs. You can also do rugs that are framed on the outside. Lots of really neat stuff!
